When you walk through the deep doorway of Linden Spring, the large stone fireplace, blackened by two centuries of use, that anchors the end of the house, is one of the first things to catch your eye. Deep windowsills, venerable ceiling beams, period hardware and four working fireplaces add to the authenticity of this 18th century home. But in fact, much of what you see is only half a century old.

Linden Spring was built in 1779 by Robert Lucas and his son on a large parcel of land granted by Lord Fairfax. Almost 2 centuries later, the house was almost completely gutted by fire. The house stood derelict for 20 years until purchased by Bob & Martha Putz, who began a total renovation in 1970. Robert Putz resolved to return the house to its original condition and spent many hours studying all aspects of 18th century houses, including building techniques, woodwork details, cabinetry, and more.

The Putzes salvaged what they could of the original building and incorporated it into their restored home. Many of the floors now in use are constructed of boards salvaged from the ruins of the 1779 structure. Bob used hand-made nails and cabinet knobs to copy the ones already there. Much effort was expended to retain the 1779 home features yet make it modern and easy to manage.

The new owners, who have lived here for a few years, have used the extensive grounds and outbuildings to create Westvirjeni LLC, a boutique style floral shop for special event and everyday arrangements; they grow many of their own flowers, present workshops, and conduct learning sessions.

When you come to Linden Spring, be sure you allow time to roam the grounds of Westvirjeni while you admire the wonderful workmanship that went into creating this jewel of a home.

Refreshments will be served.
